Imperialism Reflection

Overview: What did you achieve this unit?

In this unit, we take a look at European Imperialism, which is when Europe country quested for natural resources. I participated in class discussion, read from textbook, created a political cartoon, the Berlin Conference, and watched documentary. In order to demonstrate our learning students wrote essays and created presentations to illustrate the effects of imperialism on an African country of their choosing. I chose Tunisia, which had been colonized by the French. What I achieved in this unit is that I learned different natural resources in different location of Africa. Also, understand the idea of how Africa were separated into different country, like zimbabwe or madagascar.

Enduring Understandings: How did European imperialism affect the world?

Imperialism affect the world in many ways. Imperialism help the world by reducing local warfare. With European military control the amount of raids between tribes was greatly reduced. It also improved sanitation and brought hospitals and schools. Additionally, economic grew, since colonies gained railroads, dams, and telephone and telegraph lines. However, the drawback is that traditional cultures were replaced or destroyed. Europeans introduced a policy of assimilation in which Africans were expected to give up their culture, and become absorbed within the European culture. Africans also lost control of their land and their independence. Lastly, there was division of the African continent. the artificial boundaries that combined or divided groups created problems among the African people.
