Wix Reflection Quarter 1

 

I. Introduction

 

In this quarter, we read a lot of stories, such as Chinua Achebe’s “Marriage is a Private Affair”, Grace Ogot’s “And the Rain Came”. Additionally, we read a poem by Yeats “The Second Coming” and a book called Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. For every text we read, we analyze the important part of the story and answer reading questions. Moreover, we read Lieber article response on Korean gift-giving and values and relationship essay. Value and Relationship essay was the biggest part of this quarter because it was the part where I write the most. Recently, our class just presented Egwugwu mask with symbols that represent ourselves. Few skills we will continue to focus on are writing personal narratives and supporting these with specific examples and details; short literary analyses with evidence from the text to support.

 

II. Essential Question

How do relationships and values affect a person?

 

Relationships and values can affect a person completely because he/she has to follow his/her culture and traditional. For example, Lieber’s article “ Korean gift-giving” talks about children buying gifts for their parents. This let us think is buying a gift for your parent an admirable thing to do? The answer will depend on the society's culture and belief. According to my personal experience, relationships and values do affect me. For example, I have followed Thai culture, such as taking shoes off when entering someone’s house or taking care your parents when they are old.

 

III. Reflection

I think my strength is on value and relationship essay because I got a high school on that. I think that’s because I organize my essay well and re-edit to make it better. However, my weakness is grammar and identification on the test. Next quarter, I could go through the book more carefully and make sure I remember all the important quotes. I think I enjoy making Egwugwu mask the most because it’s interesting and I get to explain about myself. Lastly, I wish I never have to do wix because all I did was writing things I did in the quarter and didn’t teach me anything.
