Poetry Synthesis

Unit Overview

In the first quarter, we spent time understanding how authors develop complex characters. Miss Strangewood is one of the story. We also spent 4 weeks of the quarter looking at poetry and how poetry connects to the larger world. During that time we learned about poetic techniques, such as figurative language, imagery, and sound devices. These techniques give me an idea of what poems consist of. Lastly, we learned how to apply supporting statements using evidences from the text.

Enduring Understanding: Where do you find poetry?

Poetry are everywhere. It is even in music, where people are protesting about the world’s problem. There are various poetic formats we have analyzed in class, such as traditional vs. organic poems. Those two are different in that one of the is more formal than the other. I gain understanding of the poet’s message by looking specific details, like people, setting, theme. On writing, we must have an introduction, claims/assertions, and evidence to support our thoughts. We also must use transitions words and the paragraph has to be formal style with correct grammar and spelling.
