WWII Reflection

Unit Overview:

This unit carries on from the previous unit on the events and outcomes of the Interwar period. Students will gain an overview of WWII by participating in a group jigsaw presentation and sharing work with each other. The focus of the unit is on WWII in the Pacific with emphasis on the Americans versus the Japanese. The class will watch and analyze the mini-series The Pacific to gain an understanding of the effects of WWII on the geography and people involved. Students will participate in class discussion and create maps to illustrate the significance of WWII in Asia.

Personal Unit Overview: What did you achieve this unit?

In this unit, I learn a lot about the events that happened in world war 2. In this chapter, we covered WWII in europe, U.S., and the pacific. I’ve never learn about these topics before so this is new to me. I did well on my WWII presentation, summarizing important information. I also did well on my open-book test and understand the key ideas on the pacific.

Enduring Understandings:

  • How did WWII affect Asia?

First of, there the allied power, which are America, Britain, and France. Then there is the axis power, which are Germany, Italy, and Hungary. During the pacific, the Japanese were involved. The goals of the japanese were to be powerful and the world leader. They also wanted to conquer more land, since Japan is just an island. Therefore, they needed to import goods from other countries. Additionally they wanted to dominated all of the southeast asia, that’s why they attack China. As a result Japan control lots of the land in the pacific, such as Burma, China, and Korea. The other result is that many people died. The battle at Guadalcanal were bloodshed. Soldiers died at the beach, floating. However, America won that battle.

  • How did geography affect WWII?

Geography really affect WWII because of the barrier from the Atlantic and the Pacific ocean. The Americans, which came from a long distance faced with limit amount of supply. The country like U.S. will not find traveling to Japan through ocean easy. Climate is also another factor. Weapons during this period were not waterproof, which cause the soldiers a big issue. Some of the soldiers also faced with hot/cold, as they were not used to depending on where they came from. Terrain is the last factor. They weren’t any roads or anything, They may even faced with steep mountain in between their destination.

Unit Standards:

Skills:

  • Publish clear and coherent writing for an intended purpose and audience through the flexible use of technology

  • Interpret the central ideas and provide an accurate summary of sources

  • Integrate visuals and/or data to support ideas

  • Use multiple sources to synthesize and integrate information

Content:

  • Analyze and describe the causes and outcomes of World War II

Area of strength: Which standard was your strength and why?

Integrate visuals and/or data to support ideas

    • I think I am good at this, since I’m a visual learner. Whenever I see image or data, I can use those information and write into words.

Area of growth: Which standard needs improvement and how can you improve for the future ?

  • Analyze and describe the causes and outcomes of World War II

    • I think I’m fine with this, however I should do more research for a bigger ideas of WWII. I think I know the events and the consequences well but can’t really tell much about the main idea.

Evidence: What evidence do you have of your learning?
