Unit 4: Yearbook (2D Design)

Unit Overview:

In this unit I moved from designing and printing 3D objects to 2D design and photography. My focus was on the photography side of designs. I was tasked with taking a variety of photos for the yearbook. Among the photos I took, were the Kinder and Elementary Hands photos that will be used on each of the classroom pages for the yearbook. The effect we wanted to create was to make the hands of the little kids appear as though they had paint on them. To do this we used the green screen to take photos of all the students from PreK-Grade 5. We then used Adobe Photoshop to remove the background, making it transparent. We then needed to use the color replacement tool to put the paint effect on their hands. The final step was stitching the photos together, resizing the students, and exporting it in the correct format, which was png. Throughout the unit we had many deadlines to meet, and challenging tasks we had to divide up equally between the members of the photocrew. We used Google Spreadsheets to keep track of the work we had to do, and what was done. We also used Google Docs and Gmail to coordinate photo times with teachers. It was a lot of work, and at times we felt stress to get it done in time, but the result was great, and that was all the motivation we needed. The hard work was worth it in the end

Enduring Understanding:

In this unit, you did some authentic learning, learning that can be applied to the real world. You were tasked with creating either a layout, template, taking photos or photoshopping images, for this year’s yearbook. This book will be viewed and purchased by our Berkeley Community, so how you do on this is very important, and meeting deadlines is crucial. By completing this task you get a taste of what the real world is like.

How can the work, and skills you gained in this unit, be applied to your real life, or your future?

The work that I did in the unit is really essential and could be applied to your real life. I learned a lot about photoshop because I had never done anything this big before. Cutting off the background and painting kid’s hand is no easy task. However through practice, I was able to erase background faster and more accurately.pl

Reflection on Progress Towards the Standards:

Strengths: Technology Operations and Concepts: demonstrates a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems and operations. This was my strength because I have no problem with the programme. I was able to fixed the problem and get my work done.

Areas for Improvement: Responding/Connecting: interpret perceive and analyze artistic work. Next time I can divide the work with Yok in a more organized way. Sometimes we were slow in emailing teacher.
